Inmate fights for the right to read gay magazines
Kyodo News reports that an inmate doing time at a Tokyo detention center is demanding that authorities recognize his constitutional rights and allow him to read gay magazines. The Tokyo Bar Association has sided with the man:
The detainee, who was in custody on a drugging-robbery charge, demanded in January 2007 that he be allowed to read magazines, including ones for homosexuals, but was not allowed to receive such magazines, according to the association.
The detention house maintained that gay magazines contain explicit content that may corrupt discipline at the facility, the association said.
The man, who immediately filed a petition with the association seeking help, told it that these magazines were available at the detention facility in Yokohama, at which he had been detained before.
