Woman in the Dunes

The headline of this post has nothing to do a movie/book. It’s actually about Ayumi Kaneko, a worker at the Tottori-sakyu Sand Dunes who has come up with a new gimmick to amuse tourists:

The sand dunes, once Tottori’s most popular tourist attraction, were beaten in visitor numbers last year by yokai-tastic Mizuki Shigeru Road. Will a lady standing on a wooden pole boost visitor numbers enough for the dunes to reclaim the #1 spot?

has anyone actually seen the movie Woman in the Dunes? It’s fantastic.

I’ve yet to see the movie though I know everyone talks about it. Teshigahara Hiroshi was an amazing director. He did the film adaptations for many of Abe Kobo’s books.

The new tourist attraction is some woman standing on a stick? And this made the news? If I want to see someone doing stuff on an upright log, I’ll just go rent The Karate Kid from Tsutaya for 200 yen and watch Daniel-san do his Crane Kick practice on the beach.

A ride on a camel through the dunes is still a much more appealing reason to go to Tottori.

if you look at the very end, in the back of the guy being interviewed, theres a couple walking by and they stop and go back and look into the camera

They should have like sand castle contests or something.

Involve the dunes and the sand! Camel and Dune buggy rides.

There’s a lot they can do if they really want to increase tourism there.

They could create a legend, like a sand monster or spirit or something and put on shows.
