Mount Fuji climbing season begins

And so it has begun….I’ve done the crazy thing — climbing Fuji 5 times…and was even considering making it 6 times but really, the mountain is hundred times more attractive seen from afar. The view from the top is fantastic though and well, do it once and it’s an achievement, do it more than that is nuts, as considered by most people I know.

Anyone going up and taking the Fujiyoshida route (the most popular one) should be warned that it all starts up comfortably cool and nice and easy. In fact, at the beginning you go down the slope first….but then it gets steeper and harder to walk….harder to breathe….harder to stay awake…and it gets very cold up there.

I’ve never slept overnight in any of the cabins, so if you are going to do the same then rest well before the 7-hour-or-so overnight ascent to the summit. Good luck with the weather and may you see the glory of the break of dawn, when the sun comes up to reward your efforts….and before you have to endure another 2-3 hours of never-ending slippery way down, zigzagging for an eternity under the hot morning sun. Onsen is a definite recommendation after the descent, if you still have any energy to find one.

Some people are tough and can endure the cold and heat, the lack of oxygen and all the physical ordeal, but if you don’t think you are you should be better prepared than some of the people I have seen going in summer clothing, bringing nothing to eat or drink, and getting sick half way up, many cursing their way up…

PS: standing atop of Fuji is a thrilling experience, if you still have any energy left by then. On a fine day, look down at the lakes, to Kanagawa area and Tokyo Bay. It’s all very breathtaking.
