Jenkins applies for permanent residency

Remember Charles Robert Jenkins, the American who defected to North Korea in the 1960′s, married a Japanese abductee, and later came to Japan? It’s being reported that he is applying for permanent residency:

Sources said that Jenkins, 68, visited the Niigata Branch Office of the Tokyo Immigration Bureau on Tuesday and filed the application. The decision on whether to grant him permanent residency is expected to take about six months.

Jenkins came to Japan from North Korea in July 2004 with his daughters Mika and Brinda. Up until now, Jenkins had been staying on a string of limited-term visas, but in July last year, a branch official reportedly told him that he was able to apply for permanent residence, since three years had passed since he entered Japan.

you only need to wait 3 years before asking for permanent residency?

If you’re married to a Japanese, then yes. otherwise you have to live in Japan at least 10 years. I think this is kind of too long… Things may change soon though.

actually i had to wait five years. there is nothing WRITTEN down anywhere as to how long. i applied after three (some guy at immigration gave me the papers) and when i handed them in they told me NOOOO – FIVE YEARS. anyway, i hope i gets it.

Yep, it seems every case at immigration outside of re-entry permit applications is up to the whim of the guy at the desk that day.

If Jenkins gets PR after such a short stay, it will be a slap in the face to those who apply and are denied, EVEN after 10 years, on some technicality, while having much cleaner records than Jenkins’, no matter how you feel about his past.

But anything connected with North Korea is defintely going to be decided by the highest levels of the LDP while considering how Kim Jong Il will feel about it, all the other foreingers who are denied PR won’t even be part of the equation.

Jenkins should get hanged not for running off to North Korea but for joining the Uncle Gestapo Sam in the first place. He is an illiterate hillbilly so that does explain why he joined the forces in the first place.
