Argentine wife learns to cook Japanese food

June 22nd, 2008 by James

A segment from Asahi TV’s J Channel News visits a Argentine woman living in Yamanashi Prefecture and teaches her how to cook oyakodon:

A very brief summary of the video’s contents:

  • Her husband was born in Argentina to Japanese immigrant parents, and they moved to Japan after getting married. He hopes his wife can learn to cook oyakodon the way his mom used to make it for him.
  • When she attempts to make some oyakodon, she starts adding in all kinds of extra ingredients. While adding cheese and other stuff to it makes a pretty tasty dish, it doesn’t make oyakodon. They find a Japanese cooking expert who teaches her how to make true Japanese-style oyakodon.
  • When her husband comes home from a hard day teaching karate, she follows the recipe she learned and makes oyakodon. He likes it, and so does their daughter!

Why they play Aram Khachaturyan “Spartacus” ballet any time Maria adds mint or chees to her dishes? Khachaturyan was Soviet(Armenian) composer, but not an Argentinian one.

She (Argentinian wife) said Cumin is a South-American spice but it’s actually from Egypt.
