Facebook in Japanese

Facebook in Japanese

Noticed this little box when I signed into Facebook recently. (I sort of avoid it…) You now have the option to switch the entire site over into Japanese (or a selection of other languages). I figured that this was on the way, having posted about a banner that popped up in Japanese a while back. Anyway, if you’re a Facebook user and you’re studying Japanese, it’s a great way to get some more reinforcement in. And invite all of your Japanese friends who can’t be bothered with English language menus too, since they’ll have no issues now. :-)

If you’re interested in social networking, especially in Japan, you might want to check out Mixi, as well. It’s the number one social networking site here. If you missed it, Koichi over at Tofugu wrote about how to go about making more friends using Mixi. Read it and get on the bandwagon!

Hey Deas, didn’t know you wrote over here :)
Sadly people can’t join mixi now unless you have a japanese mobile cell phone email address (or live in Japan, since they don’t ask for one if you have a Japanese IP).

I had no idea about that that sucks. Why would they have such a system? Are the western otaku who sign up really that much of a nuisance?

For the most part, yes. You get a few nice Western otaku that join up and keep to themselves, but an ever-increasing number is just out there to annoy everyone else — similar to the *chans raiding 2ch, or otaku joining nico… :(

I think it’s the other way around. They would ask you for a cellphone address if your IP is in Japan. I use KDDI as my ISP and they asked for a cell address when I invited mys– er, “someone else”…

This is to keep people from having dozens of sock-puppet accounts, though it seems it hasn’t curbed the trend since I still get lots of “footprints” from people with only “Make lots of money! come to my site” or “click here for nekkid pics!” in their profile.

I’m surprised you got that message now. I got that about a month ago. Translated a few sentences and then got bored. (>_<)
