Tokyo Sky Tree really represents the current trend in valuing environmental protection/preservation. Right now, it's cool to be green. I wonder if the name will eventually become a nostalgic reminder of our generation decades from now.

AGREE with the "NEW" added to the existing tower's name! On the same note...I think the new name is weak and doesn't quite have the ring to it that matches it's cool design.

Since they renamed it, I think "Tokyo" should have been left out of the name. And at the same time, take Tokyo out of Disneyland and Narita Airport (as they aren't in Tokyo!!!!).

"I agree it’s a lame name, but I’m sure we’ll all get used to it in no time and think it’s perfectly normal"

Agreed - case in point, the Nintendo Wii. Target of dick jokes for months, and then everybody kind of just accepted it after that.

Is the name in Japanese or English?, I see Tokyo Sky Tree written in English in a banner in the video, is this for the benefit of English speakers or are Japanese people supposed to refer to it by this English name too?, I haven't been to Japan myself so I don't have much knowledge of English usage there.

the difference between the winner and the runner up is really enormous, and I think Tokyo Sky Tree is a great name, Rising East Tower is good too, but Tokyo Sky Tree is way better, I don't know what you see bad in that.
What is horrible is that logo, I guess is not a final logo.

I agree it's a lame name, but I'm sure we'll all get used to it in no time and think it's perfectly normal ... until someone else comes along and reminds us how Japan-ized our sense of word choice has become ;)

Just a quick note for James; I think the name in English should be Yumemi Yagura if you're going to separate it into two words IMO.

Interesting is that the motivation for building it is that too many tall buildings in Tokyo limit the coverage of the old broadcasting tower.

Maybe a move to cable TV would be more energy efficient and cause less cancer in migrating birds? (Ok, I made this up)

A broadcasting tower is so, well, turn off the 20th century.
