American Death Note

TokyoGraph reports that an American remake of Death Note is in the works:
American movie studio Vertigo Entertainment is apparently working on a remake of the popular franchise “Death Note,” which has been turned into three live-action films in Japan. The news was quietly revealed in production notes for the horror films “Shutter” and “The Strangers.”
According to IMDB, Vertigo Entertainment has acted as a production company for remakes such as The Grudge, Dark Water, The Departed, and The Eye.

thank you. I will punch in the face the next person who tells me they’re looking forward to watching another shitty remake. I take that back, everyone has their own tastes for movies…

Ugh, i agree SO much. :/
i can’t believe this. I mean death note is one of my favorite animes. If these stupid americans ruin it… i don’t even have words to express the anger that i’m feeling.
If the japanese live action movie wasn’t that good, then the american version can only be worse. of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but i bet the only people who will actually like this movie, are those who have never seen the anime. And then there we’ll be, all of us who know that the movie is all wrong, full of anger, not being lbe to do anything. :/
(my friends and i were thinking of protesting, but we don’t think we’ll go to far with a couple signs and a bunch of teenagers protesting about a movie -cry)

I am American and guess what… I TOTALLY agree with protesting. I’ve thought about it several times…. perhaps that is why it is taking so long getting it out because there are ALOT of people very vey angry about the whole concept. I liked the Japanese movies, and therefore think they should be left alone. I LOVED the anime…. I agree with the FACT that my country only steals ideas because we have no creativity… Oh yeah… I am as UPSET as everyone else. And Yes… the Story will be ruined if Hollywood goes through with it.

Is the anime popular in America? The Japanese live Death Notes were pretty poor. Here’s hoping for an R rating with some gratuitous violent death scenes.

It’s been aired on Adult Swim, so I guess it’s popular enough here for Hollywood to think they can turn a buck on it.

Owwh, why O why do they have to make a freakin remake of almost every good japanese movie?! Are they too stupid to come up with something themselves?? I can only imagine to what level they will screw this one up again

Death Note was terrible as a live action film, and this will be even worse. I guarantee it.
They are really trying to milk the cash cow… hopefully it will go straight to DVD, and less people will see how much of a disgrace to Japan it will be.

I agree, Hollywood just can’t come up with their own so they have to go Americanize yet another good anime…Americanizing something is like watering it down, dumbing it down and overplaying it all at the same time ~_~

A theater nearby showed a special screening of a dubbed version of the first Japanese Live Action Death Note movie, I’m hoping it carries the next two as well at some point.
They were good, but I would have preferred original language with just subs…
The Grudge US was terrible, while the entire Ju-On series was awesome. I’ve seen the original Thai version of Shutter, haven’t seen it stateside yet, probably won’t.
I’ve had it with American Remakes.

In America Anime nerds are mostly 13 year old girls shouting the occasional japanese words and drooling over L or something. But for those like us who have a huge amount of respect for the franchise am really dreading and seething over this.

Although I wouldn’t agree about your stereotypical generalization, it is true that remaking a movie which was made from an anime which was made from a manga is dragging the media chain a bit too much.

it doesnt matter, it’ll never be as good as the original, at least I know that for sure, I mean come on, who will play Kenichi Matsuyama’s “L”? I will laugh (humorlessly) at whoever ATTEMPTS such an absurdity

That’s it. It’s gonna be shit like all the movies listed above (I’m talking about the remakes because the original versions, Oh man, Ju-on? that was a great horror…)

After watching the anime, I discovered that the live action was not that good. I would watch this new movie if they took it in a different direction than the movie and followed the actual anime. I loved Death Note, and as it was airing, I couldnt wait until the next week when it would continue. But seriously, I will hold this against the American makers of the new movie if it ends up worse than the live actions. Any anime this good does not deserve to become a terrible american remake.
For one thing, I cant even picture an American actor playing the parts of all these japanese characters. The thing that made the show what it was was the cast of characters. You cant just throw a wig on Brad Pitt and give him lots of ice cream and candy and call him “L”. haha

i really hope hollywood doesn’t screw this one up – for the sake of american pride (or whatever they have left). and also, i strongly disagree with Reiku up there. i am from america and (although i’m asian) there are many, many, many different types of anime-lovers here. i really don’t appreciate the harmful stereotyping.
and despite all the flaming of an “american remake”, i’m looking forward to it. i’m glad death note will be getting more publicity in the general, non-anime-watching audience.

I don’t see why everone is giving it crap. whether or not it is good has no effect on you.
not many people, in my opinion, are bigger death note fans than i. i nearly cried at the end of the second death note live action (just incase no one else has seen it, i won’t say why).
if it is good, which is a matter of opinion, hurray! if not, why should it matter. it may have been a waste of your hour and a half, but you could’ve been doing worse things.
as for zac effron being light, i really don’t think it could be all that bad. you have to be a good actor to go from a law and order svu episode to a disney musical. he has a wide variety of things he can be and i’d he say looks the most like light out of all the actors in hollywood.
however, i think i would be pretty good as light myself =)

im not criticizing american movies..but if it was an originally asian movie..they shouldnt mess with it..im a big fan of death note..and as for the movie..i dont think anyone in america is good enough to portray L like kenichi did..i dont even dare to imagine an american L or american light..

*SPOILERS*
L Lawliet is English, he’s an orphan from Wammy House in London.
Light is a prep’ AND by the way he’s the bad guy!
The Japanese movies are a different story than the anime by far.
the director shows alot from a fatherly perspective so Chief Yagami never dies in the Japanese Movies.
Most importantly the allegory of Light as the “Angel of Light” versus L as the friend who was betrayed and killed [Messianic reference for you antisemitics out there] never enters into the movies but a trickle of it.
Rem is a FEMALE!
They are scripting AND casting the “RE”-make of Death Note in this 2009.
the movie is scheduled for release 2010.
the Japapnese actor for L was wearing a wig! but he was alright for a japanese actor yet L is more intelligent than childish.
to give a real oppinion of the creative process you really should be creative.
if you don’t know even the myriad details of the anime, atleast, then you shouldn’t be commenting on something that has little official info released on it. e.g. imdb.com says as of now says: in development for 2010. that’s all that’s been released to most of america. yet the insiders know that Vlas and Charles Parlapanides will be scripting under Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment.
look on youtube to see what the fans have picked for some possible actors, you will be surprised. in a good way i’m sure, depending on which actor you root for to get which part.
the manga or the anime Death Note/Desu Noto NEEDS not a “re”-make but to BE MADE. Japan doesn’t have the budget for a story of this caliber so a remake should sound good to those of you who never voice your thoughts here…
i am saying that those of you who want to see Desu Noto told in it’s entirety and not ruined by gore flick freaky director’s like Roy Lee (who does have some vision in creating a mood atleast) and who want to really change the world like L:
VOICE YOUR OPPINION ONLINE YOU COWARDS!
that’s right the real cowards aren’t the spammers and late night freaks who hate the world and blog about it…
It’s You People! “What’s Up People?”
if you love Desu Noto, L, Misa, yes and Light the boy who never wanted to be judged by those that truely loved him despite his mistakes…
Then STEP UP.
Because the people will listen if you can speak some truth-
if any.
i hope atleast one person hears me on this.
but then you all say the same thing.
…or you’re just spam.
“I’m chasing some one without a name or face
some one who believes he’s on a righteous path
ridding the world of criminals
but his brand of justice is misaligned
By acting as a God he himself has become the criminal!”

It actually is famous… i think in all america there are people ho sees anime (and by all america i mean all the continent, not only USA) and about TV, the people in america, well… they do see anime in tv, but were they see anime the most is in YouTube, it has nothing to do with television, it’s our global sours of information THE INTERNET.
And about the movie… well… the japanise versions were really poor… the only think that was great are the shinigamis, but looking at the actors, they were not like them or acted like them, i’m not saying that the american version will be better, but maybe if they put a lot of money and take the time to look for the apropiate actors (people ho really knows, not only about the anime, but people ho has really read the manga) then they will actually make a good movie.
Hopping that they wont just make a crappy movie!!!

They can’t keep the same names if its going to turn American…UNLESS they still manage to put the settings in Japan.
I don’t see why people are so weird about an American Death Note, Japan has used some ideas from America as well, you can’t argue with that.
I’m going to see it, because the movies weren’t at it’s best, and I see this as another redo on the whole franchise.

I’m seriously worried because of the following likely situation: As said before, you just can’t slap a wig on brad pitt and call him L, the characters and storyline in death note are far too complex for the average joe to understand, therefore it is almost certain that it’ll be dumbed down and over-acted, then could possibly become popular among silly girls who think like OMFG Zac effron was soo hot as Light, etc. etc. If it happens like this, people will see the American movie as DEATH NOTE, instead of a death note remake, inevitably demeaning an intelligent, original and mindblowing anime. Other situation is that the movie turns out crap and the name of death note is tarnished, people who know how I worship the anime will be like ‘my god, how could you like death note? It was crap.’ And then assume that Deathnote=crap. Both situations, Me=angry as hell. I honestly hope with all my might that they don’t turn the characters american. Death note is set in japan, and the characters are japanese.(Except Watari, and the characters showed as american).

I actually think it may be interesting to see an american remake. One needn’t be a japanese purist (Japanophile much?) to show their respect for the franchise! It would potentially expand the fan base and could be really good for the industry (And perhaps clear anime fans of some of the bad rap we have recieved!)Thinking “if it’s American it will suck” is no worse than being a screaming, language blending fangirl in my book. Seriously, look at the big picture and you will see that it could prove to be REALLY benificial to anime fans, and could pave the way for more mainstream reception for other anime, manga, and japanese films, bridge the gap between pop culture and cult hits, and basically pull a currently underground subculture out into the open, exposing anime to a much wider american audience!! And on the culture aspect of a remake, Death Note isn’t intertwined with japanese culture and folklore, so a transition between the charaters and setting wouldn’t be some doom-bringing scenario. Not to mention a remake would expose average people to the more intellectual side of anime, as opposed to, say, Dragon ball Z or pokemon. So…yeah… be more open my peeps. <3

blaming hollywood for bastardizing every remake is very ignorant. nobody forces these ASIAN companies at gunpoint to sign over the rights.
and yes, i do think every remake is a pile of horseshit, but i’m more angry with the directors and representatives for demeaning their artistic freedom just to increase their reputation and cash in their dignity.
death note is a great series, but not even close to the films i’ve seen destroyed by western culture (thank you kurosawa kiyoshi).
