Rising fuel surcharges…

May 24th, 2008 by James

Hoping to take a flight to or from Japan in the near future? Be aware, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airlines have announced painfully high increases in their fuel surcharges which will add over $500 to the cost of some round-trip flights. Here’s some details:

Airline / Route Previous fuel surcharge (one-way) New surcharge as of July 1st (one-way)
JAL/ANA: Japan to Canada, Europe, Mexico, Middle East, Oceania, USA (mainland) 20,000 yen 28,000 yen

United Airlines and Northwest Airlines raised their fuel surcharge for Japan-to-America flights earlier this year to 17,000, and with oil prices continuing to rise, the future looks pretty dark….

In Europe airlines have to quote their prices to consumers including ALL taxes. This way you can immediately see how much your ticket really costs.

Just like adding consumer taxes etc. to all other consumer goods is obligatory in Europe and in Japan.

Seriously,
It’s so frustrating.
Whenever I start shopping for airline tickets, I immediately double whatever price I see, which is pretty much accurate.
