So that‘s why so many people were buying “sweet potatoes”:

Seven men, including a high ranking member of a crime syndicate, were arrested Sunday on suspicion of selling stimulants at a fake sweet potato stall in Nishinari Ward, Osaka, in breach of the Stimulant Drugs Control Law, police said.

Though a sign on their stall referred to delicious baked sweet potatoes, the 47-year-old crime syndicate member, Makoto Nakanishi, and the six others were actually selling stimulants, generating sales of about 300,000 yen per day, according to the police.
