Confrontation between Japanese and S. Korean patrol boats
A South Korean fishing boat that was being pursued by Japanese patrol boats for illegal fishing within Japanese waters successfully fled into South Korean waters today, thanks to some help from the South Korean coast guard:
On the sea 17 miles south of Hongdo, an island off the nation’s southwest coast, four Japanese patrol boats are confronting six South Korean patrol boats, including a 1,500-ton vessel, and one helicopter Friday afternoon, Busan coast guard officials said.
The Japanese patrol boats allege that a 134-ton South Korean fishing boat was in Japan’s EEZ earlier Friday, coast guard said.
According to an article up on TradingMarkets.com, the last year has seen an increase in the number of South Korean fishing boats seized for illegal fishing within Japan’s EEZ.
Update: The confrontation has ended.
