Japanese Comedian Sekai no Nabeatsu

For the last few months comedian Atsumu Watanabe, who is known by the stage name Sekai No Nabeatsu, has been getting a lot of air time on Japanese TV. Almost all of his performances have relied on his ability to act wacky while counting. Some people I know think he’s pretty amusing, while others hate him with a passion.
Below are a few variations of his act:
Acting like an idiot for numbers than contain 3 and multiples of 3, feeling good for multiples of 8:
Idiot for numbers than contain 3 and multiples of 3, in English, French, and Spanish!
Idiot for numbers that contain 3 and multiples of 3, with his double being an idiot for all other numbers:
Idiot for numbers than contain 3 and multiples of 3, dog-like counting of multiples of 5 (counting up to 2000):

I can’t stand this obnoxious turd and am really bummed that you put him up here. The Guy Is Not Funny. At all.
The American guy didn’t soudn too impressed but the subtitles made him look like he enjoyed it. The french girl got cut off after hardly saying anything. I wonder if they thought he was as stupid as most of Japan Probe’s viewers do (>_<) I have this kind of Japanese comedy.
The kids at school are into him. Let’s get some Edo Harumi up here and have a comedy vote!
Oh please no; she is just as if not more dreadful.
It’s funny at first, but then gets kinda scary like the American guy said.
good to see that japan tries to get mental ill persons back into the middle of society…
no srsly this is annoying!
I lol’d at the first one. But his pronunciation in the other one just annoyed me.
This is the kind of thing which is only funny the first time. Around. Like that “Gets” guy… what’s-his-name.
I’ve seen him a lot because I watch the shows my favorite comedian is in (he’s a ‘MC’). I’ve never really laughed by watching this guy, I guess maybe it’s cultural difference; as pointed out earlier, it could be perceived as discrimination. Even my favorite comedian sometimes says racist kind of comments, which could be seen completely normal in Japanese society and everybody laughs, and I know he doesn’t have that kind of intention, but I can’t really laugh.. and I feel bad.
is it just me or does that “picture” made him look 70% like Andy Lau.
Japanese “comedy” is still 50 years behind comedy in the English-speaking world.
Whacking each other on the head, doing stupid voices, and trying as hard as possible to come up with an new version of “Who’s on First” and failing (while also making sure to hit your partner on the head a lot)
And they STILL do the Japanese version of blackface, putting on a big fake nose and blonde wig to “be a gaijin”
Can anyone clue us in to GOOD, ORIGINAL Japanese comedy?
The only good ones I’ve found are The Rahmens, kind of Python-esque, responsible for that famous “Japanese Tradition : Sushi” parody how-to video.
While I agree most comedians you see on prime time TV are dreadful, calling Japanese comedy “50 years behind” can’t be more wrong.
Just watch M-1 Grand Prix at the end of a year, or watch some old programs by Down Town (I don’t mean the recent Gaki no Tsukai crap). Listen to radio shows by Hikaru Ijuin or even Kosakin.
The reason why you’ll never see such things are because they are heavily verbal-oriented (not just un-deux-trois), so you don’t know what’s going on unless you speak the language. Like it or not, only the most stupids have chances to be known ouside the country.
Oh, and yes, Ramens are fairly nice.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. Watch Gyagu Manga Biyori. Watch Golden Egg. Stop talking about the glories of the western world and get your head out of your arse, neo-colonialist.
If you’ve ever made any money teaching English in Japan, the “colonialist” insult would be a wee bit hypocritical, wouldn’t it?
But thanks for the recommendations. Surfing through Japanese braodcast TV’s usual rotation of cooking shows, and talk shows about cooking, I had given up trying to find gems in the shit.
Ucchan-Nanchan is the best! XD (just my personal opinion, as Im a big fan of them).
This is just a rumor but the reason that you guys don’t see them on TV that often anymore (they used to have a lot of their shows, like until several years ago) is that a cult organization (SGI) is kinda pushing them out of TV industry, although they still manage to have their own show, like Iromonea, but a lot fewer.
You see, Japanese TV industry is full of lies and wrongdoings.. if you google you’ll find a lot. I heard many of Geinojins are members of SGI because if you become one, you get to be on TV more, and then they get brainwashed. And the industry is dominated by those Productions that are huge in power.
So that’s why my poor UN are kinda pushed out because their Production is small, and just because they’re so nice that they don’t even talk behind ppl’s backs. (SGI members try to recruit new members so often that they just nicely asked them not to at their own show, and then their shows were ended, followed by new shows with SGI members.)
Anyway, it was kinda off-topic.. but yeah, there’s a freedom of speech but religion and work should be separated…
Oh, and the point was that there *are* definitely high-quality comedies in Japan, like UN, but maybe you don’t see them because of those behind-the-scenes things. So those comedians we see that we don’t find funny maybe are on TV just because companies think they can make a big money out of them, not because they truly think they’re funny. And I believe UN are very talented and funny (they’ve been around for 23 years by now).
I think they should really push cult out of the industry and otherwise the quality will keep going down..
I don’t think this outlook would hold up very well if we were to compare Japanese prime-time comedy to U.S. prime-time comedy.
I will note that Japanese comedy/variety shows on the whole seem to stagnate quickly (as they eventually mimic each other) and are always looking for ANYTHING to reinvigorate the show. Usually it’s crap like this guy, but on rare occasions you’ll get something that helps the shows evolve – then it’s copied and copied until it becomes the new cliche. Same thing goes with just about any other industry whether it be movies, music, fashion, etc.
I’d like to second Downtown’s old shows, too. Gaki no Tsukai definitely has had its moments in the past, but they became less frequent as the show progressed, sadly. The last New Year’s special was pretty awful as it’s now devolved into celebrity cameos, old acts, and sheer repetition.
Yeah, another problem with Japanese TV industry is that they heavily depend their resource on commercial ads, except NHK of course, and during the past decade or so, TV companies began to heavily base their decisions of what shows they should make/end on the numbers of audience rating, and I think it’s very problematic.
It’s problematic because they don’t make shows in order to show to the audience anymore but just to get enough numbers of 視聴率 so that they can continue the business, and otherwise, they’ll discontinue these shows, and this seems the sole reason why the TV shows are kinda ’stagnating.’
I read some online articles and some people have criticized this phenomena, attributing the emergence of the Internet as one contributor to it.
Fyi, this recent article wasinteresting:

Finally we have a candidate for this year’s comedian du jour.
Soon Sekai no Nabeatsu will join the ranks of Tetsu & Tomo, Guitar Samurai, Hiroshi, Hard Gay and the newest inductee, Yoshio Kojima.
For those of you who don’t find him funny, better not watch Japanese TV for the next, oh, 7 months or so.
I love how the show translates his “unique” and “surprising” as 「面白かった!」.
I don’t mind him …. he’ll come and go just as quick as Kojima Yoshio no doubt.
he’s not funny. But i dont hate him because i know he tries his best to enteratain people and every occupation as long as it is decent deserves respect
I hate him with a passion. Nah I dunno, first time I’ve seen him but I thought he was pretty annoying.
