Urban Chinese view Japan ‘more positively’

A new survey shows that anti-Japanese nationalism may be on the decrease among urban Chinese:

The Beijing-based Horizon Research Consultancy Group last June polled 3,181 residents in the country’s 10 largest cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The perception of Japan by the city-dwellers improved dramatically last year, measuring 2.04 units out of a maximum 4 in the survey. The figure rose from scores of 1.84 in 2006 and 1.82 in 2005, the survey revealed on Sunday.

The research group considered the frequent exchange visits of high-level officials, particularly those after former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe’s “ice-breaking” trip in the autumn of 2006, as the cause for the dramatic improvement in perception.

In related news, President Hu Jintao had a friendly dinner with the Emperor yesterday and it looks like his visit to Japan will not be focused on arguments about history.

From the Chinese point of view, all countries are either a threat(2) or a vassal(1).

Most important info is that about half of Chinese think that Japan is, somehow, a “threat” to China?!

But how can one trust any poll, especially one from China, to be nothing more than propaganda. Who did China allow to participate in this “poll” anyway?

Especially when they want to make it seem that 75% of Chinese think Japan doesn’t “respect” China… subtext…”RESPECT CHINA, YOU NIPS! EAT OUR POISON GYOZA AND LIKE IT!”

Many Chinese ppl think Japan is a militaristic nation which politically hasn’t changed much from 1930s, and China is a pacifist nation which is often bullied by the West/Japan. However it may sound distorted, that’s what 1/5 of the Earth population seriously believe. (I’m not saying I’m one of them.)
