‘Yasukuni’ Screening In Tokyo

This is great news that someone in Tokyo has the guts to screen this film for the public.

People should go see this film with an open mind and make up their minds about both the film and Yasukuni afterward.

My hope is that this film will be the #1 film this at the box office in Tokyo this weekend. Whether or not it is, we shall see. I would be interested in knowing what the box office take for the film will be this coming weekend.

Like in my previous post about Yasukuni, it’s time for the Japanese public to decide once and for all about what to do with Yasukuni. This is an issue that has been hijacked for far too long by extremists on both sides of the issue.

Debating about the future of Yasukuni shouldn’t make one less Japanese or patriotic (whatever passes for Japanese patriotism these days).

My guess is that the movie theatre will meet with some kind of protest or threats. It’s predictable, just like death and taxes.

Hopefully, viewers of the film will be brave enough to ignore these kinds of threats at quashing the debate.

Just as an aside, I braved the bomb threats and protests from Christian fundamentalists (who hadn’t even seen the film) to see Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ” when it premiered in my hometown back in 1988/89. I still very much the same person I was prior to seeing the that film.
