ダイユーエイト (Daiyu 8, http://www.daiyu8.co.jp/ ), and カインズホーム (Cainz Home, http://www.cainz.co.jp/ ) are also major DIY/Handyman chains with full parking lots on the weekends.

Japanese do do DIY. Kahma Home Center, Musashi, etc are two major chains of home handyman stores. Musashi in particular is massive, and has enough to build your own space shuttle. Just about the one place in Japan I've seen lawnmowers for sale....

Never say "the Japanese don't do XX" as I can guarantee that no matter how obscure XX is, there's a fan magazine published, fan clubs, and dedicated people learning it....

If this were a japanese company it would have been ruled that the guy should have used the correct size screwdriver. Always remember "japan for the japanese" is the slogan of the government here.

I've always felt that IKEA's instructions were kind of haphazardly put together, but at the same time, anyone with even the semblance of a brain could fill in the blanks for putting together the furniture.

I find it strange that the government felt the need to make IKEA change their instructions, though. Does one injury really entail this kind of massive change? Was this just one of many injuries?

I've always thought that IKEA produced idiot proof furniture (and assembly diagrams that even a moron could decipher).

I guess Japan has created a better idiot.
