There Were Vicera in them Days…

Found a really odd collection of old Japanese art, including lots of anatomy pictures, thanks to this post on Morbid Anatomy.
Those brain folds look a lot like Ukiyo e clouds…

According to this page, Minami Syoshi (1784-1825) who edited that book in 1819 was a medical doctor who served for the lord of Yodo. He was apparently affected by European anatomical science that had been introduced into Japan in the late 18th century.

The first European anatomical book that was introduced into Japan in the late 18th century was “Ontleedkundige Tafelen” that had been published in Holland in 1734. You can find a similar figure in page 297 of “Ontleedkundige Tafelen”. <- the whole book can be seen by clicking the link.

I wrote in the above comment that the name of the author was Minami Shoshi (南小柿), but it turned out to be wrong. I thought “南小柿”, that can be read as Minami Shoshi, was his full name. However, googling revealed that “南小柿” was his family name. His correct full name was Minagaki Yasukazu (南小柿寧一).

That anatomy scroll is designated as a national important cultural property since it is one of the most detailed anatomical records in the Edo period that was affected by European empirical science.

You can see notes written in western language here on the scroll. They are words of praise for the Minagaki’s work written by a European doctor, Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866).
