Hundreds Gather For ‘Free Tibet’ March In Nagoya

A ‘Free Tibet’ march was held in downtown Nagoya on Saturday. According to an OhMyNews article, about 500 people participated, many of them drawn to the event through internet sites such as 2-channel and Mixi.

The Japan leg of the Olympic torch relay will take place in Nagano this Saturday (April 26). Will it also draw hundreds of protesters?

Update: An article in the Sankei Shinbun reports that a Chinese organization is planning to gather 2000 Chinese students and bus them into Nagano to act as pro-PRC cheerleaders during the relay.

The Japan chapter of Students For A Free Tibet is also organizing a Nagano protest, as well as a protest tomorrow in front of the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo. For more details, check out their English language homepage.

Peaceful demonstrations are great.

I hope the Beijing Olympic will be successful as Chinese people wish.

But I also hope China will admit its brutal history with Tibet, and start giving Tibetans and Chinese people freedom.

Dalai lama wants the Olympic to be successful,
Tibetans are not against the Olympic.
All they want is freedom.
Nothing is lost from Chinese people if Chinese people and Tibetans get more freedom, and Chinese people will be happy if the Olympic is successful.

Beijing Olympic will be a great success if Chinese people and non-Chinese people work together so that Chinese people and Tibetans may get more freedom.

Chinese nationalists might want to give a second thought to who is
to blame.

Let’s not be hypocrites, I’m pretty sure most people want a disastrous olympic. For the satisfaction of who thirst for justice let’s hope for it.

I think people do not want to see China collapse. That will be disastrous for the world.

If Chinese people want the Olympic to be successful, let them have it.
If Chinese people want respect from the people around the world, let them have it. (China has already a respectful traditional culture, though)

The best way for Chinese people to get respect, the best way to make the Olympic successful is to give themselves and Tibetans more freedom and speak out for it.
People around the world will applaud it.

The Chinese people are wise, I think they know the answer.

So, are Chinese college students studying in foreign countries the new “fifth column”?

Judging by all of the recent stories of Chinese “students” involved in Pro-China demonstrations on foreign soil, it certainly seems to be the case.

Think about it. The Chinese Government has an instant goon squad in any and every country that has Chinese college students. It doesn’t sound that far fetched to me.

Oh, BTW, CNN’s Jack Cafferty was absolutely correct with his “goons and thugs” comments about China recently. Mr. Cafferty was referring to China’s Government, but it seems to be that he should have also mentioned Chinese students in the same breath.

Don’t ever want the Chinese mad. They can be very aggressive when mad. In almost every university, there is a Chinese Department and a Chinese organization. If you make one of them mad (lets say pro-Taiwan independence or post up pictures during WW2 that doesn’t show Japanese “cruelty” enough), they all will make a big deal out of it. That what happen at my school.

The question really is, if Tibet was independent, would it survive? The Central government provides 90% of Tibet’s expenditures, and Tibet is completely exempt from taxation. What sort of economy would they have if they were independent?

Isn’t that what world powers do – Establish themselves throughout the globe in order to “assist lesser nations”? China also has a major hand in developing Africa, but no one is crying over human rights there. This all really just smells of a political-economical war being waged through the media, and no matter how much I disagree with the Chinese political system, I feel they are being unfairly vilified through the news.

It’s clearly self-serving, and not at all peaceful, but the economical advantages lie on both sides of the line. Western nations do the same sort of projects, but typically mask them as pure, selfless aid. “We’re in the Middle East to establish liberation and democracy.” It’s all about power and resources, making allies and intimidating the opposition.

My above comment was intended as a comparison between the media skewing the Tibet-story versus the rather quiet issue of Africa. The media is very often clearly anti-Chinese. Bringing this up doesn’t mean I’m pro-China, either. I’m just trying to look at everything objectively. Indeed, there needs to be a Change in the way China operates, but all these protests just seem so childish and antagonistic. The Tibet issue isn’t new, but it’s escalating. Why now? It’s a perfect time to lash out at China, an intimidating future economic rival, when all eyes are on them for what is supposed to be an event of international bonding.

I felt the first link had, again, heavy bias with phrases like, “As a repressie regime itself…,” though it did come through with some useful information. “A recent World Bank study simulated the effects of China’s and India’s growth on the rest of the world, starting from various assumptions. In every case it came up with positive results for all but a handful of European and Asian countries.”

What I think some people are forgetting is that Tibet is China, and their revolt is a national issue. The region has been a part of China since the 1200′s with a brief de facto independence of about 40 years from 1912 – 1950. International interference is escalating the problem, and the only information we are presented with in the mainstream media is from an economic rival’s point-of-view. It’s the same over the Taiwan issue. The insinuation in Western media is that Taiwan wants independence, but that’s not the whole truth. Being a part of China is a major economical advantage, and the region is split nearly in half with support for the Central Government against pro-Indepence factions. As my good Taiwanese friend once remarked, “What are they talking about? We’re Chinese.”

That was a really cool article about China’s influence in both Africa and Central/South America from The Economist.

A lot has been written about China’s role in propping up the repressive Islamic fundamentalist regime in Sudan. Yes, the PRC does have “peacekeepers” in the Sudan. However, it is more akin to keeping the peace in Darfur and elsewhere inside the Sudan, so Chinese companies can tap the oil and manufacture weapons (How convenient for the Sudanese Government, eh?).

Economically it is nor certain whether it pays for China to run Tibet.
Dalai Lama is realistic that he does not advocate complete independence from China. China’s economic “help” is useful.
But I think China has killed too many Tibetans and oppressed the religion since invasion, and the income gap between Tibetan and the Chinese in Tibet is still so big that the some kind of riot is inevitable.

Giving Tibetans (and the Chinese people ) the kind of freedom they claim they need is a solution but that may risk the cause of CCP.
