High Tech Bicycle Parking Facility In Tokyo

April 19th, 2008 by James

A video report on an amazing new bicycle parking system that has opened at Kasai Station in Tokyo:

Customers who come to the station by bicycle need only place their bike on a small platform and hit a few buttons, and the system will automatically store their bike in an underground parking garage that can accommodate 9,400 bikes. When the reporter asks the machine to retrieve his bicycle, it only takes 23 seconds to accomplish the task. The parking system costs 100 yen for a single use, or 1,800 yen for a monthly pass.

Update: Yes, similar facilities do exist for cars and can be found in major cities around Japan.

Looks cool. Seems like if one bike falls over in storage it could crash the whole lot. I wonder how long before it gets hacked and starts handing out free bikes to anyone with a bit of tech skills.

I’ve actually been to Tokyo, and i seen at 100 every day when I was there, so this seems like a pretty good idea. The sidewalks in Shinjuku are about a meter wide so its hard to ride a bicyle let alone walk on the sidewalks without dodging other bicycles

Yeah, I think so. I was once able to watch a show (From Deutsche Welle I think) that featured something like this for cars. However, it’s not for public use. It’s located at VW’s (or some other German car manufacturer’s) headquarters I think, or at least one of their larger stores. Its much much larger than this, but it’s fast as well. It’s used for “dispensing/delivering” the desired car to the waiting purchaser/customer.

This is amazing. And so cheap! If they built something like this in this here in the UK I bet they would charge like £10 = 2000 yen for a day.

But given that they can’t even get their underground to work properly here I doubt they could pull something like that off at all.

That is the coolest thing ever. I’m really surprised the station went out of their way to make such a system for just bikes.

Wow, I’m sure if they had such a cool and secure system for bike storage in the UK, people would start riding bikes just to be able to use it!

I think this will be a great idea in Holland, because everybody has a bike here and the streets and pavements are full with bikes everywhere in Holland.
