Nagano Cancels Torch-Related Event

April 15th, 2008 by James

A cancellation over security concerns:

An event the city of Nagano had planned to host on April 26 following the Olympic torch relay has been canceled, a city official said Tuesday.

The event, which was scheduled to be held in front of Minami Nagano Sports Park shortly after the Nagano run is completed, is the first event related to the Nagano leg of the relay to be cancelled.

It was axed out of concern following the disruptions during the Olympic torch relay legs in London, Paris and San Francisco caused by demonstrators protesting against China’s recent crackdown in Tibet and about other human rights issues, said an official of the city’s education board which had planned the event.

The event was cancelled “in order to concentrate on management of the torch relay,” the official said.

Do you think there will be any major protests during the Nagano torch relay?

Doubt that Japanese people care enough about Tibet or Darfur or Falun Gong to protest. The 2Chan crowd keep talking about protesting on their message boards but I bet they’re full of it. A group of skinny otaku shouting anti-Chinese slogans is going to look ridiculous anyway.

My opinion is that there will be less chances of a protest occurring in Japan because I have the impression that generally, Japanese people usually keep their opinions to themselves, especially if its critical of something or somebody else. Although, of course, this is a very hasty generalization. If ever there won’t be any protests, I won’t attribute it solely to lack of care. I am however expecting a large showing of Chinese supporters, whether bused in or not.
