Eh, it sounds like a pretty cute idea to me and I'm sure 14 year old Japanese girls will agree. You could have a different scent for every person programmed in your phone and that way you'd know who was calling/messaging even in silent mode.
I wonder if it could be used as a perfume spray, that'd be really handy.

I was standing in front of the seats in the priority seat section with my cell phone in my hand. You're supposed to keep your cell phone turned off in that part of the train so the person reprimanding me for texting was correct in doing so. Based on the looks of the passengers standing around me, I wasn't the first person, either. :)

However, because of that, I generally avoid that part of the train.

Interestingly enough, according to the BBC, the use of mobile phones on airlines in European airspace has been approved.

I've personally never used my cell phone for speaking on the train. I've also been scolded by another passenger for texting in the Priority Seat section too so I generally avoid that area when riding trains.

For some reason people think talking into a cell phone means shouting. That's why talking on a mobile is actually less noticeable in Japan than it is in the US. In the US, if someone's talking on a cell phone in public, EVERYONE knows about it.

On the other hand, depending on which train you take in Japan, talking seems very looked down upon by other commuters. I notice this mostly during rush hour trains as most of the business people seem to feel it's necessary to keep silent the entire trip. It's pretty amazing to think that a train full of hundreds of people can be dead silent.

I'm personally getting sick of the whole manner campaign going on here. It's important to respect the commuters around you, but people become openly hostile towards others they consider to be inconsiderate. The evening Sobu-line is particularly scary around Akihabara.

As people start buying things with their cell phones instead of cash, advertisers will want to track our purchasing habits. What do we buy? When? How often? Where? With that information, we'll be exposed to highly targeted advertising. What fun!

Being obnoxious on your cellphone is more of a western thing. Actually seeing someone talking on a phone (as opposed to mailing) is rare enough, I can't recall ever seeing someone talking on the train (if I have seen it I've forgotten, either way its uncommon). Hell, even hearing a ringtone go off on a train is pretty uncommon since people are pretty good about using manner-mode.

I can't imagine this being very successful though since scent generator technology still currently relies on using preloaded chemical vials which are aerosolized in combinations to produce certain scents. How many people would be willing to repeatedly buy scent cartridges for an extremely gimmicky feature?

Darn, when I saw the picture loading, I thought the girls were the add-ons... I can only dream.

This product though will likely go the way of smellovision, the smellputer, and the smellboy. I guess it may sound gimmicky and absurd to our wicked western ears, but since when did the Japanese care about gimmicks?
