The Newest Must-have Addition To Our Cell Phones?

Our phones have GPS navigation systems in them, can be hooked up to our finances to pay for things, they can browse the internet, have hi-resolution digital cameras, video cameras, TVs, MP3 players, you name it… They couldn’t possibly do anymore, could they?
According to a tech website Japanese cell phone makers have done it again and have produced the latest in cell phone technology, the “Smell-o-phone”. It uses DoCoMo’s pre-existing technology used to play audio and visual material on the handset and this information will send information to a dedicated device connected to the handset.
The device is loaded with some scents and then a combination is emitted as the audio video content is played. Nothing is specified as to how big the spray is, or how powerful the scent might be.
The applications for this technology are varied and I can already imagine ads coming up intermittently on your phone for Jonathan’s and the less than subtle scent of Microwaved famiresu cuisine being sprayed in your face. An Asahi ad and the scent of an alcoholic man being sprayed up your nose.
We already have millions of people talking on their phones at inappropriate times hurting our eardrums, as well as people offending our eyes with their millions of hideous trinkets and decorations on their phones. Could this be the next thing to offend the person next to you on the train? Is anyone out there interested in buying such a phone when they finally become available?

The cell phone of the future comes ever closer… Turn your mobile phone into a musical instrument |

Darn, when I saw the picture loading, I thought the girls were the add-ons… I can only dream.
This product though will likely go the way of smellovision, the smellputer, and the smellboy. I guess it may sound gimmicky and absurd to our wicked western ears, but since when did the Japanese care about gimmicks?

Being obnoxious on your cellphone is more of a western thing. Actually seeing someone talking on a phone (as opposed to mailing) is rare enough, I can’t recall ever seeing someone talking on the train (if I have seen it I’ve forgotten, either way its uncommon). Hell, even hearing a ringtone go off on a train is pretty uncommon since people are pretty good about using manner-mode.
I can’t imagine this being very successful though since scent generator technology still currently relies on using preloaded chemical vials which are aerosolized in combinations to produce certain scents. How many people would be willing to repeatedly buy scent cartridges for an extremely gimmicky feature?

Sorry, but isn’t the date a little wrong for a April Fools? Mayhaps you have been fooled?

As people start buying things with their cell phones instead of cash, advertisers will want to track our purchasing habits. What do we buy? When? How often? Where? With that information, we’ll be exposed to highly targeted advertising. What fun!

I don’t think anybody would a cellphone that allows you to smell and who would want that.

Eh, it sounds like a pretty cute idea to me and I’m sure 14 year old Japanese girls will agree. You could have a different scent for every person programmed in your phone and that way you’d know who was calling/messaging even in silent mode.
I wonder if it could be used as a perfume spray, that’d be really handy.
