UK Samurai Sword Ban

The U.K’s ban on the sale, production, and importation of samurai swords has gone into effect:

Those breaking the law face six months in jail and a £5,000 fine. Carrying a sword in public is already illegal.

Exemptions will cover swords which are used for re-enactments or antique weapons kept on display by collectors.

Eight years ago a councillor was killed by a man wielding a samurai sword in the office of Cheltenham Liberal Democrat MP Nigel Jones.

Anyone found guilty of importing samurai swords will face up to seven years in prison and an unlimited fine.

Knights’ Broadswords, Umbrellas, Golf Clubs, Steak Knives, Paper Airplanes, Pointy Ice Cream Cones, Sewing Needles, Knitting Needles, Shish-Kabob Skewers, Barbecue Forks, 1/8″ Headphone Plugs, Paperclips, Staples, Stiff Paper, and anything else you could feasibly prick, slice, bash, or chop yourself with should all be outlawed. The problem isn’t that things aren’t regulated enough, it’s that they’re TOO regulated. If you make everything dull, plastic, and rounded, the first time someone encounters a sharp, pointy, metal object like a knife or sword, they’ll hurt themselves or someone else for lack of experience.

C’mon, how can anyone miss Sharp Nails. Grow them out, and sharpen them to a point; those could be as deadly as mini-knives >.< .

Wow, seven years? People charged with assault get less than that. By the way, what exactly do they mean by an “unlimited fine?” (Everything you earn goes to them? 0_o)

Actually, there used to be a sport, 19th C. I think, in the Ohio river valley of the US of A, and that sport’s name was gouging. Participants would grow out a thumb nail or two and sharpen it into a point as you describe. In the contest, they would try to gouge out the eye of their opponent. You could only lose twice.

If I can’t sell my sword, and no-one can by any, does that make it more valuable?

And do cosplay swords count towards this law? Ban them too. No, ban all cosplaying, unless performed by hot chicks.

Samurai swords are popular in Britain for some reason. When I lived there, from 2001-03, I remember reading about replica Samurai sword crimes a lot. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but politicians will ban anything you give them an excuse to. Of course, it is usually the vocal minority who scream at the politicans to ban this crap. “It’s for the greater good!” Sure…

Yeah, you probably did read a lot about samurai sword crimes. Simple explanation for this – they’re unusual. Rare, not very common, don’t happen a lot. Thus they are news and get treated as such.

Note that being stabbed by a screwdriver, carving knife, fork, pen, pointed stick or indeed most other household objects are never mentioned in any detail (if at all) because they’re so dern common.

I have a real samurai sword and it has six samurai heads on it and my dad cut himself on acsadent and almost cut my head off.

btw, Alex is 11. His dad joked that the sword was so sharp that he almost cut his hand. Alex also likes to exaggerate events, his dad did not almost cut his head off.
