I read the book "The Reluctant Communist" about Sgt Charles Robert Jenkins and his forty year life in Communist North Korea. It was very interesting and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get an idea of the daily hardships of just surviving in North Korea. Jenkins describes a very controlled life and how he and the other three defectors attempted to escape to Russia in 1966 but were turned away and returned to the North Koreans. The book is very well written and is very interesting!

Yeah, I saw the interview with that dude on 20/20 or one of those shows. He is all pro N.Korea and his son is training to be a N.Korean diplomat. Very weird. Although he was in bad shape when they inteviewed him so maybe he is dead now?

I heard of this book, but didn't really have an idea of what it was about... apart from communism.
Sounds like a good read, so I might pick it up.

The thing about the young girls wanting to kiss him is rather odd though.

I'd definitely be interested in reading his autobiography. I'd read the Japanese version for language practice but I wonder how similar/different the English-language version is.
