well most of the comments i have read are either *clears throat* um .. yeah i agree that she doesnt have The “ASIAN” standard beauty i always thought of japanise/chinese peeps as pale but i wont go there now i think she kinda pretty but i bet she’ll look like one of those…nvm

I think it’s the hairstyle and makeup that made some of you think she doesn’t look Japanese. If you give her a “cancam” style makeover (i.e. drop the tan, dye hair in blond, the cancam style makeup..etc etc), she would look exactly like 20 other cute Japanese girls you see on the street.

I certainly wouldn’t put her as Polynesian myself.

And I think I am on the opposite regarding ugly faces. An ugly white face is uglier, simply as the features are than much more distinct. I would however not say one is prettier than the other. I’m not being PC here – I genuinely do not have a preference. There are blue-eyed blondes who can make me go weak at the knees (only the knees), but there are dark-eyed black-haired Asian girls who can do the same.

The Japanese are the mongrels of East Asia – with successive waves of immigration into the islands, there are distinct variations in facial type that are more pronounced than their neighbours. The two most notable differences are the “Jomon” and “Yayoi” facial types – the longer face vs the rounder face. Both of them are very definitely Japanese.

This relative diversity can make it difficult at times to say someone does or does not look Japanese. Some Japanese look Polynesian, and some even almost look European (and I do not mean the Ainu). But this person definitely does have a different look than the current fashion ideals and starlets. If I were shown her face in a isolated environment (ie without any clues by background or fashion – naked would be a good start) I would probably think she is a Filipina or Thai or something.

And I’ve been in Japan for the better part of two decades, so certainly don’t base my ideas on media images I was indoctrinated with before arriving.

But regardless of how “authentic” she looks, Japan can do FAAAAAR better….

I would have to say that unless you were there you shouldn’t bother commenting, she is a lovely girl with a lot of presence and beauty.
WHY are you talking about the “props”??
As for the comment that a French woman has been running the competition, is that the “French” woman that has catapulted Japan to the forefront of Miss Universe in a very short space of time?
My impression of these very talented and accomplished bilingual, lets not forget still very young women, is that they have an inner strength, I suspect that most of these comments are coming from males whose idea of a Japanese beauty is a little archaic and involves a lot more giggling………

Criterion: what the majority of Japanese around me look like. Ogura Yuko, just as an example, looks Japanese. Choi Ji-Woo, as another example, looks Korean. Neither looks particularly Chinese, just as Gerard Depardieu looks French not German, Sylvester Stallone looks Italian not Irish, and Prince Charles looks English not Russian.

Perhaps what Bonesdog meant was that the last 3 Ms Universe winners were not beauties typically considered classic Asian beauties with small faces, pale complexions and largish eyes.

The main reason might be due to the fact that a French woman has been in charge of the selection and training process. Miss Universe is not an Asian contest hence in order to win it, one has to appeal to the judges, who typically prefer the tanned, strong boned, olive eyed look typical to South Asian women.

She looks something, but not particularly Japanese. The last winner was the same, as was the one before that…. It seems that in order to be win a beauty contest (aside from “Miss Todai” or something) in Japan, a girl has to look un-Japanese.
