Japan has decided on its representative to this summer’s Miss Universe pageant: 21-year-old Hiroko Mima has been crowned Miss Universe Japan 2008.! Here are some photos from last night’s ceremony:

She looks SE Asian…
I agree.
She looks something, but not particularly Japanese. The last winner was the same, as was the one before that…. It seems that in order to be win a beauty contest (aside from “Miss Todai” or something) in Japan, a girl has to look un-Japanese.
I probably see 5-6 women on my way to the train station every morning that are more attractive than she is.
Yeah, ‘good looking’ must not be a criteria in this contest.
I was hoping Kana Anan would win … guess that’s not the case.
Where did they dig her up? That last photo makes her look like a Botoxed grandmother….
I was going to say the pics at Mainichi look like a bunch of well-worn dancing girls from an inaka Filipina pub. Not a pretty sight.
god, I live in hawaii and there’re a lot of japanese girls over her, most of them is more beautiful than that. And what is a black guy doing in a miss japan contest???

As for the comment that a French woman has been running the competition, is that the “French” woman that has catapulted Japan to the forefront of Miss Universe in a very short space of time?
My impression of these very talented and accomplished bilingual, lets not forget still very young women, is that they have an inner strength, I suspect that most of these comments are coming from males whose idea of a Japanese beauty is a little archaic and involves a lot more giggling………

I didn’t say big titties, I said a lot of them. In numbers. Mind you, some are quite nicely cleavage-enhancing, and without the corresponding muffin-top you get in Da West.

I think it’s the hairstyle and makeup that made some of you think she doesn’t look Japanese. If you give her a “cancam” style makeover (i.e. drop the tan, dye hair in blond, the cancam style makeup..etc etc), she would look exactly like 20 other cute Japanese girls you see on the street.
well, the not so pale, on the brownish dark side is what we call exotic to the westerners here in manila, so that could explain as to why such kind of beauty is considered to be asian. i mean even ken watanabe is dark, soooo??

Everytime there’s some post about one of these contests the “never had sex” crowd comes out blabbing about a)I’ve seen 200 girls at my train stop better looking! or b) Is she (some other Asian nationality) hooker or what? If you can only judge what “looks japanese” is based on your AV collection I guess you might have that opinion . . .
