Japanese Royals Will Probably Skip Beijing Olympics

April 3rd, 2008 by James

It is being reported that Japan’s royal family will probably decline an invitation to attend the Beijing Olympics:

The Japanese government thinks it is not a good time for a rare royal visit because of the unrest in Tibet, a recent health scare over Chinese-made “gyoza” dumplings and a spat over disputed gas fields, the Sankei daily said.

“We were planning not to ask royals to go even before the gyoza incident (surfaced in January). It is all the more true now that the Tibetan unrest occurred,” it quoted an unnamed government official as saying.

Japanese authorities have confirmed at least 10 people suffered pesticide poisoning after eating tainted dumplings imported from China.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao invited Emperor Akihito and other royals to the opening ceremony of the August Olympics when he visited Japan last year.

The emperor told Wen then that the government decides on the royal family’s foreign trips, a palace spokesman said.

I can see the Tibet situation as a reason not to attend, but why the gyoza incident?

Good for them! I’m boycotting the games as well. Of course my boycotting of the games; being a nerdy, zookeeping, internet surfing, chair jockey does not really hold any kind of world changing importance.

But that’s just my opinion :P

I wonder how many people know about 175,000 Chinese lost their homes in China because the government need the space to build for the Olympic buildings. Many of these chinese are old and very poor and not in good health. They are out in the street or some were able to move in with relatives. Anyway that is too many people who had to move out of their homes for the Olympic. Also China need to give up Tibet.

Of course they shouldn’t go! If they went it would be paid for by tax money, and the government is constantly letting us know that it doesn’t have enough money so they can’t be wasting it on trips by the royal family. No, they need it for massage chairs and sports equipment and subsidized housing for bureaucrats.

Gyoza???? Still?

They should boycott Japan for its millions of recent food scandals.

It sounds to me that the gyoza incident comes to turn out as a political issue since China seems to be not showing regards on recognizing their mistake on industrial processes.

Also, there is a doubt and a suspicion of sabotage, as the cases were very isolated, and the pesticid, not a common product to see in homes, so that it could not be possible for the contamination to be a home accident.

Yet, I bold here my idea that political issues should not interfere in sports. I hope this ends. They’re mixing things up. One thing has nothing to do with the other.

Japan should not confuse sports with politics.
