Japanese Riot Police Training

Japanese police are trained differently than police in the US for sure. Of course, the riot police are armed with tear gas and high pressure hoses like riot police anywhere, but the basic tactic is the line up in several rows and contain the riot by pushing with the sheilds (like they’re doing here) so that it doesn’t cause panic/damage outside of a controlled area. They’re also trained in martial arts, but it’s forbidden for riot police to carry (normal, metal bullet) firearms while doing their riot duties because the risk is too high that they’ll panic and open fire and there are very severe punishments for using force.

Basically they’re trained to be a meat shield for the rest of the population and to move out of the way if they need to use tear gas, not to start beating the rioters. In many ways they’re supposed to be more passive than ordinary police officers (Note that the normal police ARE armed). Also, I believe the UK actually modeled part of their police training after Japanese arresting techniques that involve joint locking.
