Kyoto is my favorite place in Japan... It's beautiful any season.

Thanks for the photo. I've never actually been to Gion, though I've been to Higashiyama twice. Have to plan a trip back there soon.

Thanks Peter! Great point about going early in the morning... Not only will there be a lot less people but the light is much more beautiful in the early morning.

My favorite thing about cherry blossom viewing in Japan is the clouds of cigarette smoke one is exposed to. I mean, why would one want to actually smell the blossoms, when instead you could get a nice big nose-full of Mild Seven?

Evan, great photo! Agree Kyoto is a great spot to enjoy cherry blossom. Downtown in Kiyamachi is nice, tetsu gako no michi (the philosphers path) at the base of the silver pavillion is excellent too, particularly in the morning before the crowds arrive.

I guess that the street in the photo is <a href="http://maps.google.co.jp/maps?f=q&hl=ja&geocode=&q=%E7%99%BD%E5%B7%9D%E5%8D%97%E9%80%9A&sll=35.006993,135.77445&sspn=0.010141,0.015063&ie=UTF8&ll=35.005446,135.773485&spn=0.002535,0.003766&z=18" rel="nofollow">Shirakawa Minami Dori</a> (白川南通) in Gion area. That street is a nice spot to walk around during the hanami season.

Cherry trees in Kyoto has just started to bloom. Next weekend will be the best for hanami in Kyoto.
