Japan Photo of the Week: Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto

March 29th, 2008 by Evan

Unless you are in the northern half of Japan, you are already enjoying the cherry blossoms. For those of you in the Kansai region (actually anyone in Japan), I encourage you to take a trip to Kyoto during this time.

I am sure you can find nice spots all around Japan, but Kyoto is really a special place. One reason why is that there are just so many options. Of course you can go to all the famous places but try and walk around, “get lost” and see what you can find by yourself. Which is in fact how I found this street in Kyoto (although it appears that it is find of famous itself, just I found it by mistake). If you haven’t already checked out the cherry blossom photos at the gallery, here they are.

This photograph was taken by Evan Pike.

And the NCAA update… UNC won their first 2 NCAA games by 20+ pts, *I think* the only other two times UNC did that was in 1993 and 2005….both years UNC won the championship!

I guess that the street in the photo is Shirakawa Minami Dori (白川南通) in Gion area. That street is a nice spot to walk around during the hanami season.

Cherry trees in Kyoto has just started to bloom. Next weekend will be the best for hanami in Kyoto.

Evan, great photo! Agree Kyoto is a great spot to enjoy cherry blossom. Downtown in Kiyamachi is nice, tetsu gako no michi (the philosphers path) at the base of the silver pavillion is excellent too, particularly in the morning before the crowds arrive.

Thanks Peter! Great point about going early in the morning… Not only will there be a lot less people but the light is much more beautiful in the early morning.

My favorite thing about cherry blossom viewing in Japan is the clouds of cigarette smoke one is exposed to. I mean, why would one want to actually smell the blossoms, when instead you could get a nice big nose-full of Mild Seven?

haha, fair enough, but here you are going to be smelling that cloud of Mild Seven smoke with or without the cherry blossoms….might as well have some nice scenery…

Kyoto is my favorite place in Japan… It’s beautiful any season.

Thanks for the photo. I’ve never actually been to Gion, though I’ve been to Higashiyama twice. Have to plan a trip back there soon.
