Yet another Japanese Horror Remake

March 14th, 2008 by Claytonian

Oh but wait, this is actually based on a Thai movie and putting on the airs of being a Japanese movie, going so far as hiring a Japanese director and cast members for the American remake. Clear as mud obfuscation strategies to trick Americans into watching it. The preview only serves to strengthen this misconception.

The film being remade is the Thai horror named Shutter, which I can vouch for as a pretty good movie that follows the stereotypical Asian film aesthetics of dead girls with long black hair. In a way, one could claim that there wasn’t much difference between Shutter and a real J-horror flick. American remakes of Japanese Asian horror movies have been commercially successful, yet put down by pesky critics. The remake of Takashi Miike’s Chakushin Ari has a 0% on rotten tomatoes. Outside of The Ring, I would say that all the American remakes have been big disappointments, and I am not optimistic for Shutter.
You can see an exclusive scene from the remake of Shutter here.
Which J-horror do you expect to see a remake of next? Let us know in the comments, probers.

I’ve seen Shutter, it was quite good actually. Quite unnecessary to do a remake, but well everything for the mainstream audience I guess…

I really liked the remake of The Grudge though, but I am a bit of a Sarah Michelle Gellar fan so. ( ゚∀゚)o彡

I actually liked the remake of the Ring better than the original. It gave more of the backstory involved in the plot. (Though no substitute for the book!)

I may be in the minority, but I really liked the remake of the Grudge too. It’s hard to compare it to the original, which I really love, but I think it was about equal in quality. Maybe it’s because I can relate more to the experience of a foreign woman in Tokyo, that it hit home with me. The sequel was utter crap, though.

I would really be interested in seeing how Battle Royale would be made over for American audiences. If indeed it even could, given the subject matter. I don’t know if that qualities as horror, though.

For me the problem with JHorror is that what the film makers try to pass off as being ambiguous or mysterious, is really just sloppy writing. Have you seen “one missed call” it was just awful and I can’t imagine the remake could be any worse.

It’s really sad that mainstream american, and even other countries’, audiences are too intellectually lazy to watch a movie that doesn’t have the usual Hollywood actors, cinematography and location.

I think it has more to do with wanting the movie in your own language instead of having to read subtitles.

Don’t blame the audience.

Blame the people too lazy to make their own horror movies, and just want to cash in using somebody else’s work, Like Hollywood.

“scary” girls with long hair is over-rated and b-o-r-i-n-g.

I guess the only horror movie that is worth waiting is Evil Dead 4. could be the only movie.

when i first heard of this i was so frightend, and now that i see the commercials on tv it makes me want to write angry lettters to hollywood to tell them to stop remaking movies i like!!
not only does the movie look like its going to be messed up (and not in the good way the original is) but taking place in japan? wtf? did these people not pass elementry level geography?
as long as battle royale remains on ‘hiatus’ im happy though, that would be a complete rape of an amazing film

USA needs to stop ripping off Japanese ideas (even if they purchase it) and try coming up with their own.

The people have revolted against superlatives with their one user-added option! Oh well, that’s democracy. Quite amusing

I hate Americans when they start to copy ideas and put them as theirs. The movies are good but not as good as the originals.

I thought the Hollywood movie “The Condemned” was like the U.S. version of “Battle Royale” except with prisoners instead of schoolchildren.

“The Condemned” was based off the novel, “The Running Man,” by Stephen King.

I like the shutter movie, I hope this remake would live up to its reputation…
