Obama Acknowledges Obama City

March 4th, 2008 by James

Asahi TV reports that Barack Obama has made his first public comment about Japan’s Obama City:

When asked if he knew about the town in Fukui Prefecture, he replied, “Yes! It’s a nice town!” [YES!ナイスタウンだよ]

The report mentions how Obama City is cheering him on, and that some local restaurants are naming dishes after the candidate.

In other Japan-related U.S. election news, one of Obama’s top advisers had the following to say about Hillary Clinton’s refusal to drop out of the primary race:

“They are going to have a very hard choice to make after Tuesday if she loses Texas or Ohio,” Mr Obama’s top adviser David Axelrod said. “There are people in the party who are very concerned about this turning into some kind of a Bataan Death March.”

Nice to see the Japanese media asking all the tough questions!

Funny that he knew about it too.

“Funny that he knew about it” – yeah, considering what a backwater Obama is. Been there many times, used to live nearby, nothing of note in Obama but a nuclear plant.

Interesting how heavily Obama this readership is. Personally any of the top four would suit me.

Voted Obama in the poll, but I’d take Paul too. But he’s no chance… My dream candidate is the bastard love child of Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul.

What are you talking about? He doesn’t have a clue where Obama city is – that reporter just caught him off guard and he was trying to give a quick answer.

I’d agree with Turner… which disappoints me at the same time. If he is all talk the US is better off with the Clinton clan.

well obama is trying to rejuvenate the US economy before aiding other countries…which i think is right because he is the president of the US…only seems natural to me. why do japanese reporters ask him this? he hasnt even been to obama city and i really dont think he gives a sh#@ about it. theres bigger things he needs to worry about.

if i ran for the presidency in the US, would japanese reporters come up to me and ask “have you been to the Ota river in japan?” i would be like…hell no who cares? i got elections to win silly rabbit

Gosh… US politics are so celebrity-like.
I don’t mind who wins, since it doesn’t really effect me.

Obama just walked by the reporter.
I wonder if he really know there is a city called “Obama.” The way he answers it seems like as if he was trying to be polite.

He commented one time about a person he met at the airport from Obama.
