This week’s episode of Trivia Paradise had a countdown of the top products foreign tourists purchase at Don Quijote(Don Quixote) discount megastores in Tokyo:

    The Top Ten

    1. Cups of Instant Ramen
    2. Chocolate
    3. Electric Nose Hair Trimmers
    4. Socks
    5. Cosmetics
    6. Japanese T-Shirts
    7. Electric Massagers
    8. Cosplay Goods
    9. Otsumami (snacks that go with alcohol)
    10. Portable DVD Players

    Some Notes

    • The first and third items on the list came as a huge surprise to the panel of Japanese celebrities watching the countdown. At one point the host offered anyone who could guess number 1 or number 3 a large sum of money, but nobody guessed correctly.
    • Electric nose hair trimmers were popular because they were put on prominent display in the store, and were only 980 yen (less than 10 USD). Even if foreigners couldn’t read the Japanese on the product label, there were helpful pictures of the clipper being put into a nose.
    • Don Quixote has about 200 varieties of otsumami on sale. Multi-packs that could be divided up and given to many friends as souvenirs were particularly popular.
    • The Akihabara branch of Don Quixote has about 1,400 different costumes on sale. Maid costumes were very popular among the foreigners interviewed.
    • The video also mentioned the top 3 best selling products at Don Quixote:
      1. Batteries
      2. Blank T-shirts
      3. Ukon no Chikara (hangover prevention drink)
