South Korean Garbage Gets More Media Coverage

The story about toxic South Korean trash turning up on Japanese beaches has received a bit more media attention. Photos and video now make it very clear that this isn’t a problem of people simply littering, but rather some sort of mass dumping of industrial-use plastic containers.

The above map shows the the prefectures in which some of the nearly 23,000 plastic containers were found. Further details are revealed in this TBS news clip:

We are shown beaches littered with 20 liter plastic containers, and cameras zoom in to show the Korean markings on the containers. Some of the containers still contained chemicals such as hydrochloric acid.

One of the local officials interviewed in the report are hoping that this problem will be addressed at a national level.

Just go to Enoshima and check out JAPANESE garbage. There’s a lot more.
Then be like the Japanese, bury your head in the sand, and then blame other Asians.

Yeah, I love throwing my garbage into my neighbors already dirty yard and feel it’s completely justified. My neighbor has no right to complain, because his place is already trashy.

But in response to the report, the maritime ministry released a statement that the government has banned dumping waste in the Japanese-controlled areas since 1988, when the two countries specified their respective EEZs, so it bears no responsibility.

What a shame.

It says, the number of plastic containers drifted to the beaches of Japan from this January to date has reached 39,941, which is the largest number since 1999.
Of the 39,941 containers, 16,954 had some sort of letters, of which 16,273 containers had Korean characters.
