Poll: 75.9% of Japanese Say They Will Not Use Chinese Food

A week of media hysteria over poisoned Chinese food may have had an effect on the results of this new poll:

A notably high 75.9 percent of consumers in Japan said they “will not use Chinese food from now on” due to the recent food poisoning incident involving Chinese-made frozen “gyoza” dumplings, according to a Kyodo News telephone survey conducted nationwide Saturday and Sunday.

Underlining the accelerated moves in Japan to shy away from Chinese food products, surveys show that Japanese consumers using Chinese food stood at 57.9 percent until before the incident came to light in late January, but plunged to 21.6 percent after the incident.

Even if they were to check the labels of food products to avoid Chinese products, there’s a pretty good chance that some of those in the 75.9% will still end up eating something made with ingredients imported from China.

Sure people in Japan have reason to be concerned about products made in Chinese factories, but what about one other product that JT imports?

Now how can we get Japanese people to stop smoking?

“Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. These include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT.”

Smoking is steadily decreasing in Japan anyway. It’s the Chinese that make like chimneys these days.

In 1966 86% of Japanese men smoked. In 2006 41%. Dropped by almost half in 40 years. A more detailed graph of recent trends can be seen at:

which shows a drop for men from 55% to 43%. A slight increase in women over the same time, but still a total drop. Also note the increasing restrictions on smoking areas.

Also, according to TIME, 30% of world smokers are Chinese. In other words, the Chinese smoke about twice as much as the global average (15% of population, 30% of consumption). According to ChinaTOday.com, 62% of Chinese males smoke. Half as much again as Japanese males.

That wasn’t cited.

And what is the difference in females? There is a reason why you can smoke in McDonalds in Japan but not in China.

Anyway I cant believe Chinese Products any longer.

We Japanese have a right to wash out Chinese Products.

And we are going to do so.

So many restaurants basically HAVE to use Chinese ingredients just to keep costs down. It’s unavoidable that anyone who eats out will get some Chinese ingredients.
Besides, Japanese foods aren’t particularly trouble-free, so I’m sure scandal-ridden Japanese food companies are jumping for joy. And it all comes just as many Japanese food producers are raising prices “due to high oil prices”. Convenient, that.

Still, I’d never eat food produced by a tobacco company, no matter what country it’s from.

There is so much chemicals in Chinese vegetables to begin with. I heard Chinese dont eat their own vegetables. THey buy vegetables from South East Asia. This was a plot by the government. THe police needs to get to the bottom of this.

Hong Kong has banned the sale of certain foods from Mainland China. Most HK People I know will read labels to avoid eating Chinese made food products.

To Bernt,

Can you support this with evidence? Hearsay is not valid. I’m not saying it’s not true, but I won’t believe it until I see solid research completed on it.

If this was actually the case, then why wouldn’t Japan be looking to SE Asia as well? Why is it that Chinese produce prices are so low, according to Chinese nationals themselves? What you’re claiming here is that Japan is intentionally buying pricier, less healthy vegetables, when they could just buy the produce from SE Asia, and that makes absolutely no sense to me.
