Anti-Japanese Group May Have Poisoned Chinese Dumplings

The headline of this post sounds like the kind of thing you’d read on a conspiracy theory-laden 2-channel discussion thread. Frighteningly enough, it was actually taken from comments made by a Chinese government official:

The discovery of pesticide on the dumplings has received widespread media coverage in Japan, prompted health queries from nearly 4,000 people and led the importer of the dumplings, Japan Tobacco Inc, and rival Nissin Food Products Co Ltd to call off the planned merger of their frozen food operations.

“A small group who do not wish development of Sino-Japanese friendship may have taken extreme measures,” Kyodo news agency quoted Wei Chuanzhong, vice minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, as telling a Japanese fact-finding mission in China.

Something similar happened in Spain several years ago. Someone (or maybe some people) injected bleach on mineral water bottles. No one was caught for that.

They’ve resorted to stating the obvious? Was it formerly a possibilty that a pro-Japanese group was responsible?

Also, why is there no criticism of the Japanese officials who are responsible for quality control both in Chinese plants as well as within Japan itself?

After investigations many people(including Chinese authority) start believing in that the incidence was a kind of food terrorism. That is, someone or some group has intentionally put pesticide to the gyoza to give damage to Chinese food company or Japanese customers.

Japanese police will confirm where the pesticide was made by scientific identification method. But it’s not easy to do it in China, so far.

I believe that this is a kind of disinformation.
CCP fears that the consumers in other countries start boycotting the chinese food products, so it tries to limit this incident to the Sino-Japanese bilateral problem. If this were anti-japanese ultra-nationalists’ terrorism, it would become “special case.” That’s a hypothesis, of course.

I’m inclined to agree with you, Moji. This sounds an awful lot like Fujiya blaming it’s long-term, nasty practices on semi-retired part-timers.

That, and the CCP loves chances to crack down on “terrorists.”

Why can’t people or groups understand if they stop with this terrorist tipe of activity every one can be better off. Countries can profit in exchange for exporting their goods and so on.

Important “gotcha” here. Notice the Chinese did not say on which side of the Yellow Sea this “small group” is on (although by now it is well and truly obvious the pesticides got into/on the packages on the Chinese side). They left the door open – so if it did turn out to be Japanese, they’re covered, and if it did turn out to be Chinese, they can deal with it but probably also throw in a “If you (Japan) only had a proper view of history we wouldn’t have these people angry at you! But, in the interests of Sino-Japanese friendship, we will deal with them anyway…”

Always read between the lines very carefully when dealing with China. Well, that goes for here in Japan too, but the Chinese are masters at laying traps in their pronouncements.
