Aso: Japanese Food Producers Should Thank China

Taro Aso, the man who almost became Prime Minister after Shinzo Abe’s resignation last year, has attracted media attention with comments he made about the latest Chinese import scandal:

“I’ve been saying that Japanese agricultural products are expensive but taste good and are clean and safe,” Aso said. “To be blunt, the agricultural cooperatives should thank China. Great value has been added (to Japanese products).”

The comment comes at a time when a food poisoning scare over insecticide-tainted “gyoza” dumplings imported from China is spreading in Japan.

Blunt/strange remarks are no stranger to Aso. In the past he famously said he hoped Japan could become a country where “rich Jews” would want to live, and last summer he told a gathering that “even people with Alzheimer’s” could understand how Japanese rice is more expensive than Chinese rice.

Do you think Japanese agricultural cooperatives have reason to be grateful for the latest Chinese import scandal?
