Japanese Kids Think About Helping Foreigners
A short news clip from TokyoMX about Japanese schoolchildren learning about difficulties foreigners face in Japan:
The blog Zero, where I found this video link, has already posted an excellent translation of the key points of the video.
Here is the translation of what the foreigners say:
A Chinese woman: People sometimes look down on me saying, you are Chinese, I am Japanese.
An Argentine man: When I disagree with Japanese, some Japanese say, you are an Argentine, so you don’t understand.
And solutions the children present after a brainstorming session:
Kid 1: We should set up schools to teach different customs, culture.
Kid 2: We should not discriminate if we don’t want to be discriminated when we go abroad.

That’s a good idea, we actually have regular sessions at work outlining the difference each culture face within business and that goes both ways, Japanese dealing with foreigners and vice versa. It’s been beneficial to have these sessions so we can both get a better idea of how each other behaves in a business environment.

Becoming aware of problems, and proposing solutions. Even though they are only children now…A step toward progress.

its as simple as that, all people need to do is learn to undertand others cultures,
“treat people the way you would like to be treated”

“treat people the way you would like to be treated”
Exactly. it’s sad that most people never do this though. I’m trying to live my life by this, but it’s hard when you have people ready to take advantage of your kindness.

Good to see that someone is willing to introduce kids to the challenges Gaijin face in the process of assimilation.
If they only could have done this 50 years ago, maybe some Japanese wouldn’t be so Xenophobic.

I don’t think the racist ppl in Japan are going to this easy to convert in to normal ppl. It takes time and frankly, judging by the anime, Jdrama and news, Japanese ppl like treating ppl like scum. At least the Japanese kids in my school do.
