Interesting piece. Especially in explaining his motivations to become a minister, and still trying to break ties with the yakuza. I thought joining the ranks of the yakuza was forever. It can’t be that easy to just say one day, “You know what guys? I’m outta here. Think I’ll be a priest or something. Later!” :\

So he went from organized crime to being a psychological terrorist. Sounds like a logical succession.

Obviously, his ‘conversion’ was not a spiritual one, but his ongoing fear of the Yakuza. Interesting story, but quite pathetic.

Or perhaps for the stated reason of not putting his wife through hell anymore.

I’ve read this guy’s books and I’ve actually met him. His conversion was real. I’ve been to his church in Japan. He’s an amazing guy.

I have had a friend who used to be part of the Chinese Triads.
He is now a devoted Christian and I have noticed a great change in his personality, he’s very gentle and generous, and the scary persona has totally gone.
