Japan Photo of the Week: Take me back

December 29th, 2007 by Evan

Yeah I know we are in the middle of winter, but I really wanna go back to the fall! Let’s see, snow, ice and really cold weather vs fall leaves. No contest there.

After Arashiyama, I think Oirase Stream, in Aomori Prefecture has become my favorite place in Japan. I have only been in the fall but I can imagine it just as beautiful covered in snow in the winter or lush with green in the summer. I’m sure it is ok during the spring as well. For larger and more photos check out the Gallery.

is there anything special you do settings wise to capture the image of water bubbling and splashing like here?

I spent four years in Aomori and three in Tokyo, I much prefer Aomori to Tokyo for many reasons this being one of them. When you live in Aomori you don’t realize how good you have it until you’re gone, walking in Oirase when you want, camping down by lake Towada, Onsen all over the place, truly it may be inaka but it is so so good.

Claytonian: A long exposure while the camera is on a tripod does that effect. Since the water moves during the time the photo is taken, the water becomes white streaks in the picture rather than individual drops. It’s a very popular way to shoot waterfalls :)
