International Marriage in Yamagata Prefecture
Just saw this photo featured on the front page of 47News.jp:

It is from a story in the Yamagata Shinbun reporting on a marriage ceremony between a local woman and an American named Timothy Doyle. Their marriage ceremony was held at Soumaro, a historical geisha tea house/restaurant in Sakata City, and it was the first time ever that a marriage between a Japanese person and a foreigner was held there. According to the article, Doyle and his wife love Japanese culture & history, and were very happy to be able to have a traditional Japanese style wedding in such a beautiful and historical setting.

I heard somewhere that during meiji era or during WW2 (I don’t remember well) international marriages was arranged by the government especially western men with Japanese women to embellish their people because Japanese was short and apparently not good-looking. Can anyone confirm if that’s true?

That is a stupid story.
I guess you must be a Korean, or you must have heard it from them.
Firstly, children between Japanese woman and foreign man are regarded as foreigners, and they can never be Japanese until 1985.
Secondly, Japanese never think they are not good-looking, rather they used to think Western is not good-looking especially during WW2. (They were in the middle of the war, and they were educated to hate the enemy.)
Thirdly, Japanese woman who got marry with foreign man were looked down during meiji period.
All of considered, there are no reasons why the government arranges the marriage.

I have seen many different ethnic weddings. Japanese wedding is the most romantic, very calm, meditation like and of all beautiful ceremony for just the two loveing people. I love old tradition it is who we are. Treasure to keep for ever.
