Fight Global Warming With Your Toilet

December 17th, 2007 by James

Eco Toilet: Less CO2!

That’s the message in this commercial for a new energy-saving Japanese toilet seat:

Other Japanese toilet seats stay heated all the time, wasting energy, but National has created a eco-toilet that only heats up when someone sits on it. They claim that this can cut down on toilet electricity use by 73%, slashing an estimated 4900 yen (42 dollars) a year off one’s household electricity bill. [That means the Japanese government won't have to buy as many carbon credits from Hungary!]

My toilet seat is 100% energy saving! It doesn’t heat up though… Wow, they spend a lot per month for their toilet seat.

I have a heated toilet seat and there’s no way it costs 4900yen a month! The whole point of heating the seat is so that when you first sit down on a chilly December morn you don’t wake the neighbors with your icy screech. If I wanted to wait, my big a** would heat the seat just fine on its own. Maybe if the toilet pictured in the ad floating above the trees were the actual size…

Seconded. Dumb idea: I want a heated loo seat when I first sit down, thank you very much. Of course the cheap trick is just put some bog paper on the seat to insulate….

It says the savings would be 4900 per year, not per month. I wonder how many years of use it would take to make the purchase of that new toilet worth the energy savings?

I just had the greatest idea when reading this. Try combining it with the story about women requesting men to sit while peeing from the other day (actually the 13th of Dec). With a seat like this men can actually claim to save both money and the environment by standing up. I bet this can make some interesting conversations :)

A bit more on the serious side…. those toilets really sounds like a waste of energy. Wouldn’t it be better to insulate the bathroom instead?

I presume that’s why it’s called a “Japanese toilet”. I don’t think they are used anywhere else. This could be due to lack of insulation.
