2007 Kanji of the Year

December 12th, 2007 by James

The Kanji Kentei organization has announced the results of a poll to determine the kanji character that most represents 2007:

The winner was 偽 (nise/gi), which is used in words such as 偽製 (fake/imitation) and 偽物 (counterfeit/imitation). It wasn’t really a shocking choice, given all the news stories this year that involved Japanese news reports faking reports on the health value of food, Japanese TV stations faking programs, Japanese companies selling expired food, and foreign countries copying Japanese stuff.
