Japan Photo of the Week: Let’s Enjoy Pachinko
Gambling is illegal in Japan, but because of a loophole, you would never know it. The most popular form of gambling in Japan is by way of a game called “pachinko.”
Pachinko parlors in Japan are about as common as McDonald’s in America. Even in the most rural of areas, a pachinko parlor usually can be found. Basically, these places are the some of the loudest and smokiest places you can visit in Japan. By the way, if you try to take photos and somebody asks you to stop, you might want to listen as many pachinko parlors have connections or are owned by the Yakuza. For more information about pachinko, check out the Japan Photo Guide or you can buy this photo.

Of course, let us not forget that pachinko was invented by the North Koreans and that some pachinko parlours in Japan are run by the North Korean Choson Soren. Even the Yakuza don’t mess with them…

Gambling is not so much illegal as carefully controlled. Betting on the horses is legal, for example, as is cycle races I believe. Gambling in pachinko is legal too – but not for money. At least not directly, though this has to be the most open secret or flouting of the law in the country.
