Breaking News: Beautiful Women More Attractive Than Ugly Women

November 27th, 2007 by James

Which of these women women do you find more attractive?

pretty-vs-not.jpg

A Japanese TV show recently conducted a series of experiments in which men were placed in mundane situations involving the two women above (the prettier girl is on the right, for those of you who are blind) and would have to make a choice between them.

In the first experiment, a group of randomly selected men were told to go into a cafe and buy one of the products sold there. Thinking they were taking part in some sort of product marketing research, then men bought drinks. The interior of the cafe had been rigged so that the only open seats were those between the pretty girl and the not pretty girl. Who would they rather sit next to?

Result: Of the 50 men, 36 picked the seat next to the pretty girl, while 14 picked the seat next to the not pretty girl. One guy picked the seat next to the not pretty girl so he could get a better view of the pretty girl.

For the second experiment, men were given 1000 yen and told to buy something in a convenience store. In actuality, the test was to see if they would rather pay for their purchases at the register manned by the pretty girl:

Result: The program claimed men preferred the pretty girl, but it did not reveal the actual numbers.

For the third experiment, the women were positioned along a street and would ask male pedestrians for directions. Which girl would they be more polite to?

Result: Once again it is claimed that men gave better reactions to the pretty girl, but the numerical result was not disclosed.

Would you react in the same way the men in the video did?

The thing that I find interesting about these sorts of experiments are the people that play the “ugly” sides of things (in this case, the そうでない客). It’s just interesting to think about people being recruited to play and being okay portraying the “ugly one.”

I wonder the same thing about actors and actresses in film and TV shows. Although with them there would presumably be a professional wall that they could put between themselves and the character.

The first time I noticed what you talk about, comedian Minowa Haruka was portraying the ugly girl. Being that it’s sort of part of her shtick, I’d say it was, again, a matter of profession.

So perhaps they consistently hire the girls from a talent agency of some kind?

Heh, I always think about that myself.

I’m not sure I’d call her ugly per se. Comparatively so, sure, but it’s mainly that she’s overweight.

I have found Japanese people to be remarkably candid about being fat or being ugly. It’s not a big deal, although I wish most people would rather be pretty.

There are cases when you avoid pretty girls for shyness not because you don’t like the pretty girls.

It could just prove that young Japanese men are superficial. Also, the experiments were flawed from the beginning. You need more samples of women. Maybe one woman is more approachable. The overweight woman (そうではない客) had a pretty intimidating face from what I could see when she was sitting down.

In the restaurant, I would have sat next to the beautiful woman, because I’m freaking tall and right handed, and there was a huge space open in the center.

They should do a second experiment, though, where the ugly woman is the most inviting person in the world, and the beautiful woman gives off attitude. I’d like to see if the results change at all.

“It could just prove that young Japanese men are superficial.”
It could just prove that young Japanese men are superficial.
Or
It could just prove that young Japanese men are superficial.
Or we could do a test with females, and two men, say Tom Cruise and me…. (he’s the ugly one, okay?)

The sample was only young Japanese men, so the experiment didn’t prove anything about “old Japanese men”, “old men”, “foreign men”, “young foreign men”, “old foreign men”, etc, if it proved anything at all.

Also, they didn’t have a counter experiment with a sample of women determining what men to approach, so the whole thing was pretty one sided and focused on young Japanese men.

Or perhaps the experiment only proved something about young Tokyo men, or young Tokyo men wearing socks, or something.

I’d be inclined to say that all populations have their share of superficial people regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, political views, zodiac sign, etc.

And yes, this “study” was a waste of time and money for all those involved.

Oh overthinker.. you are sooo dreamy.. hahaha.

You are absolutely correct though. This has more to do with men in general than with just Japanese men.

Ouch. The first test didn’t bother me that much because no one really cares if they’re sat next to or not. The second one made me think if there are really shop assistants out there who know they’re being ignored because they’re ugly. The third one was nasty and I felt sorry for the fat girl being completely ignored. I couldn’t be so rude to anyone asking directions if they were male or female or black or white or ugly or beautiful. The thing is that Japanese people are habitually rude to people they don’t feel obligation to. However, the third one only showed 2 guys ignoring her (maybe there were more in the actual broadcast) so I like to think the other guys they tested were a bit nicer.

To me I would definitely be with the not so pretty gal, because there is a high chance that she could be one super conceited paris hilton fan.

I agree with cowboy, and I’m also a mostly heterosexual female…so I’d choose the less attractive woman to sit next to, probably? Then again, I don’t really look when sitting next to people, unless they were loud and obnoxious or really really fat or something.

Well, for females, the reasons are slightly different. I’d inquire that sitting next to the ugly chick would make you look prettier, whereas sitting next to the hot one would have the adverse effect, as frame of reference does indeed have an effect on ones perceptions of beauty.

It’s simply part of nature that one would want to put yourself in the situation with the best “chances”, even if, consciously, those are not your intentions.

The study is completely irrelevant because the sample sizes were too large and there was almost certainly a bias applied in structuring the “experiment” in order to support the preferred conclusion. The fact that they gave no numbers on some of their tests suggests that the difference between the two women in those cases was neither strikingly impressive nor statistically relevant. In other words, they forgo details when they don’t carry the emotional impact they want the program to offer.

All studies are flawed and ones like this are much more flawed than small sample ones conducted by scientific sources. Anything done for entertainment is highly suspect because things can be staged in order to make the situation appear a specific way to offer a better platform for appealing to advertisers. I’d like to know how many ads for diet supplements, makeup and exercise equipment ran concurrently with this program in order to help the women whose insecurity was induced by a show like this to help themselves be more attractive. :-p

For the cafe thing, I would sit next to the pretty girl. For the convenience store thing, I would use the register that was closes to me. Finally, for the directions thing, I would be polite to both girls cause thats who I am.
