Japan Airlines Invades Privacy of its Employees

200 employees of Japan Airlines are suing the company after it was discovered that JAL and its union had been secretly creating files full of personal information about 9800 of its employees. The two pictures below show some of the 158 types of data the files contained.

A few examples of entries included in the files:

“Single Mother”
“Zainichi Korean”
“Breast Cancer”
“Member of Sokka Gakkai Religion”
“Divorced”
“Father was a teacher”
“Stupid”

As one would rightly expect, the employees are demanding monetary compensation from JAL for this outrage.

Update: Japan Times ran an English language story about this in today’s edition. It has a bit more information in it, but few details, since it looks to be a bland translation of reports that didn’t include actual examples of what items were on the list.

The union was in on it too? Can’t say I’m surprised, given the uselessness of the union at my place.

Off topic, but…

James, any particular reason for your move from YouTube to Daily Motion? I preferred YouTube because it was easy for me to favorite a video I found particularly interesting for watching again later.

And for some on topic goodness:
They do certainly seem to be going a bit far with the amount of data they are compiling on their employees. Most of which I can’t see how it would even be of any use to them.

Dailymotion does a better job at preserving the video quality of some clips, but I’ll still use YouTube for the most popular videos, since it brings in traffic from the links placed in video descriptions.

I don’t get why being in sokka gakkai religion should be noted. Same with Zainichi Korean…perhaps their complaining wasn’t hyperbole after all.

Maybe it’s be simpler if they just finger printed and photographic each worker as they came in to work each morning.

And ya boy, who wouldn’t want their employer to know that they’re single or divorced, what they medical history and education is, etc. etc. I’d quit if I was them.
