Miyajima’s Deer

November 24th, 2007 by James

Life used to be pretty easy for the deer living on Miyajima, but ever since a new rule went into effect a few months ago that banning the sale of animal food near the island’s major tourist attractions, the poor animals are struggling to find food. Here’s a news report that shows hungry deer eating almost anything they can find:

While it is bad for these semi-wild deer to rely on senbei handouts from tourists to survive, I’m not really sure a sudden ban on animal food is a good thing. After all, these deer have spent many years living off free food from human sources, so it might be pretty hard for them to adapt to a situation where they must find their own food.

Why don’t they hunt them (just for research of course)?

Then they can sell the venison next to all that scientific whale meat.

I saw a deer on Miyajima grab a 10,000 yen note once from a man and proceed to eat it. All the man could do was smile and laugh it off.
