Japanese Police Chase
A video of Japanese police chasing a driver who absolutely did not want to be captured:
Those of us who are familiar with U.S. police chase videos might be a bit surprised at the tactics used by the Japanese police in the above video. Whereas American police often use tactics such as physically blocking or even ramming fleeing vehicles to force them to a halt, the Japanese cops in this video don’t do much other than chase the car and repeatedly ask it to stop. At one point Japanese police partially block a lane with a patrol car, but the driver slips past. At another point, a couple patrol cars set up a “road block” using a few puny traffic cones, which do nothing to stop the vehicle in question (maybe they aren’t equipped with tire-shredding spikes?). The video ends with the car disappearing into a wooded road, and the narrator informs us that the chase eventually came to a stop after 2 hours.

This is crazy…i cant believe the cops were going up to the window without a gun drawn. No PIT maneuver either. The Japanese cops need to watch the news here in LA.

Oddly enough, Japan isn’t LA.

I have to wonder why they let these dangerous chases go on for so long. This guy could have easily killed some one. Seem like it would be a little smarter to use some force and end the ordeal earlier even if it means that the suspect ends up getting hurt. Better him than innocent people.

Japanese cops have got to be the dumbest ones on the planet. With three patrol cars they could have easily blocked the road; with just a slight bit of coordination they could have blocked the other end before the guy could reverse and get out. Instead, they just put a traffic cone in front of him as if that had any chance in hell of working, and let a guy who was speeding and running red lights go off and rampage for another hour or so. What dumbasses.
This just reinforces my impression after years of observing Japanese police behavior: dumb, ineffective, and all too often useless. More worried about statistics and quotas than public safety. Not documenting cases they don’t think they can solve so their numbers look better. Ignoring real threats and nuisances to the public. And traffic cops can be the worst. Setting up speed traps along lonely stretches of country road that have absurdly low speed limits, while forever ignoring and leaving unchecked streets with blind corners, speeding traffic, and endangered pedestrians. Never coming out in darkness or poor weather when they are needed most. Spewing out tickets for the most piddling offenses just because it’s ticketing season. Almost never ticketing taxis or trucks even when they are doing incredibly dangerous, stupid stuff right in front of the cops. And so on and so forth.
If I am surprised by anything in this video, it’s that the police actually kept going after the guy and eventually caught him (I figure he must have run out of gas or something). I have seen motorcycle traffic cops at an intersection doing “gotcha” duty just let a bozo motorcyclist run off after they stopped him for trying to run a red light. The bozo started off in spurts and one cop protested while the other just stood there; when the bozo eventually sped off, neither of the two cops mounted their cycles to go after him. The idiots didn’t even write down his plate number. They just went back to work, handing out tickets to scooter drivers with 50cc bikes who committed the grievously dangerous crime of making a right turn in a 3-lane street.
Hrmm… can you tell I regard these clowns with contempt?

Well, at least their putting in a little effort and going after him like he’s a criminal. But I agree with the rest of the commenter’s here that they should adopt more of the Western style of chasing a car with hitting the vehicle even if it might kill the suspect. I might get flamed for this but lets say the suspect was shooting at the police, they would have enough common sense to shoot back since they have guns (unlike the British Police no offense to them)but that didn’t happen at least in the video so we don’t know.
