Japanese Fast Food: Advertisements vs. Reality

While most people are fully aware of the situation, it’s still pretty fun to create side-by-side photo comparisons that illustrate how burgers in fast food advertisements look very different from what customers get when they order them. Here’s a look at the burgers of Japan’s top 2 fast food chains!

Mos Burger:

Mos Burger’s menu items seem to look more like the photos that advertise them. One of the benefits of paying over twice McDonald’s burgers prices, perhaps?

The MegaMac is very very sad….
And yes, Mos is a clear example of paying for quality. Since they happen to be three times better than McRoadkill, I do not complain.

MOS Burger rules! The only problem is its size…

I’m currently working part time at Burgerking and the reason the Mos Burger burgers are looking better is simple: They ARE simple.
McDonald’s almost always has lettuce on it, which seldomly comes as curly green leaves. Tomatoes are spherical, not cylindrical and thus can have smaller slices. Mc buns are probably softer as well and the patties thinner than Mos’. Now try to assemble a burger with 5-6 parts in under one minute compared to one with 3-4 parts.

Mosburgers also often use lettuce and tomatoes. Nor am I convinced they are necessarily simpler. Especially the Mosburger with its thick layer of sauce.

The first two burgers in the video are all buns, patties, condiment, a slice of cheese and diced onions.
The Chickenburger is condiment on sliced lettuce, which is much easier to handle then several squarecentimeter big pieces of lettuce (as seen in the following teriyaki Chickenburger, and the patty. The Thousand Vegetable Burger is one of the complexer burgers, tipps over easy and looks accordingly more sloppy. The Teriyakiburger suffers from the big lettuce pieces as well. The Roosukatsu burger is easier again with sliced lettuce.
The Ebifiletburger even got some less attractive sliced lettuce, probably from the bottom of the pan.
The Spicy Cheeseburger is a bit less prone to tipping thanks to the sauce between the cheese and the tomato slice.

Funny, I was just thinking about this matter when I passed my local Sasebo Burger Cafe. They choose to use a realistic photo of their delicious, sloppy-ass product and I was impressed. If you go there, you will totally get a big, messy burger covered in everything. And I recommend it!

Do Mos burgers really come with the bun tilted to the side?

Very perceptive you are, Mr. Johnston. Yes, the tilted top bun is an unsaid hallmark of Mos burgers…though sometimes they will rip you off and not tilt it, or tilt it too much so that it falls off.

You might say they look less appetizing, but advertised burgers are not exactly edible. Trust me, if you knew what they did to those burgers to make them look like that, you’d want the food on the right.

This isn’t about spraying food with all sorts of things to make it look shiny for the studio lights, it’s about how much closer Mosburger make the real thing compared to McDonalds.

They are pretty same. And I agree with The Overthinker: “real life” burgers are all in bags in the video, can’t say for how long they were there.

By the way, we all look at commercial posters with beautiful ladies everyday, but never think that these ladies are pretty much of photoshop. Here is the same situation.

At least the McAweful stuff in Japan measured relatively close to the advertisement pictures. You want a huge difference? Go the places like Thailand, Philippines or Indonesia and check out how bad the Mcdonald’s stuff measure up to the pictures there.
