"English is certainly not the only language you can teach."

?? I'll bet for most of these people, it's the only language they can speak, let alone teach.

Of course it is an attempt to gain publicity in order to draw attention to the plight of thousands now unemployed in a foreign country. The union is good at doing that--and more power to them! However, as those in the GU know, it will take far more than that to reform the eikaiwa industry and to improve language teaching and learning in Japan.

I just don't understand why on earth won't these teachers look for another job else where or maybe start another new version of Nova themselves. When a company isn't doing well, I mean NOT well at all, due to mis-management or any other reasons, isn't that an indication you should move on ASAP? I mean come on. What's so hard to get this over with? Japan is not the only place you can teach English and English is certainly not the only language you can teach. And finally, maybe this is also a good time for a career change?

I'd say what the value of the lessons be (not current on the Eikaiwa lesson value, last I checked it was around 2500 yen) for one hour lesson should be close to the value of food received. In about three hours that should cover well enough a hearty breakfast, light lunch, and a very gorgeous supper. Now how that ties in with paying for rent, utilities, and other necessities is a different story. So does that fall under another Eikaiwa teaching program? The "rent paid for x hours of lessons" program? Not very realistic if you ask me. Perhaps those who undergo this program the teachers are expected to live at parks and shower at public bathrooms in the meantime?
