But the 9/11 attackers had some form of official documentation but still lived in the US for years prior to their attack. All we've heard about Japan's new move is to photograph and fingerprint people. Do they have any OTHER plan to catch terrorists? (I'm hearing crickets on this one) It’s funny; the idea of fingerprinting people is supposed to deter terrorists. But the 9/11 attackers had some form of official documentation but still lived in the US for years prior to their attack.

There's nothing like 20/20 hindsight, is there? Japan has indeed been the victim of terrorist attacks. One slight problem, Mr Minister: the terrorist attacks in Japan were all carried out by Japanese. Of course, given that this fingerprinting issue is not to control terrorism but foreigners, we can expect some statements like this from Ministers trying to justify themselves. Even Ministers who move in circles that are connected with people "thought to be" possible terrorists. And anecdotes are the perfect justification, right? Note that the English translation of his title is not quite correct - it's apparent that he is not the Minister of Justice so much as the Minister of Justification....
